Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council Endorses Nation’s RDI Ambition and Strategic Direction

Council meet reviews progress towards the development of a National Research, Development and Innovation Strategy for the State of Qatar

The Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council held its second council meet on Thursday 2nd May 2019, to align and advance the nation’s RDI efforts in line with the national agenda.

The QRDI Council is chaired by His Excellency Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs, with its Vice Chairperson being Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation, which is hosting the Council during its development phase. Engineer Omar Al Ansari serves as the Secretary General of the Council, whose Board comprises prominent government leaders and representatives from the field of research, development and innovation (RDI), as well as international experts.

The meet, which took place at the ThinkBay building at Education City, was the second Council meeting following an inaugural one in November 2018, and marks the latest step in the Council’s efforts to align Qatar’s RDI activities with national priorities, and leverage and maximize the impact the nation’s world-class research, development and innovation institutions.

The meet opened dialogue on the RDI ecosystem dynamics in Qatar, including the associated legislative and regulatory frameworks. The Council’s Board will draw on this assessment as it develops a strategic direction for RDI, focused on supporting innovation and generating tangible outcomes and impact.

Sheikha Hind said: “In establishing and hosting the QRDI Council as a national council in charge of drafting a national strategy for research, development and innovation, and coordinating joint national plans with various actors, Qatar has prepared the ground for a national RDI strategy that ensures our efforts in this field are channeled toward making tangible impact – both economically and socially.

Our leadership has invested in its people, and the outcome of this investment is that a sustainable, diversified knowledge economy is becoming a reality for Qatar. RDI is pivotal to the advancement of Qatar and its continuing prosperity for generations to come, and the work of the QRDI Council will be of critical importance in enabling our nation to achieve its goals and realize its vision.”

During the meet, the Council’s members endorsed their commitment to “enhancing Qatar’s resilience through locally-empowered and globally-connected RDI”, and discussed a variety of objectives to achieve this ambition.

These include the development of solutions to address Qatar’s most pressing national challenges through research and technological innovation; accelerating economic prosperity by leveraging RDI to increase the competitiveness of the nation’s key economic sectors; supporting the development of new RDI-based businesses and industries; enhancing Qatar’s global connectivity by establishing and contributing to global RDI networks; and creating opportunities for future generations of talent.

Working collectively with a wide range of national and international stakeholders, the Council will seek input and support to develop a unified national RDI strategy, monitor national RDI performance, and advise on policy recommendations.
