The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation (QRDI) Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Tuesday morning under which the two parties will boost their cooperation to harness national research, development, and innovation (RDI) efforts that provide solutions to challenges related to the sustainability of Qatar's national resources and support the sustainable management of Qatar’s environment and food and water resources.
His Excellency Mr Abdulla bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of MME and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, and Eng. Omar Ali Al-Ansari, Secretary General of QRDI Council, attended the signing ceremony.
The MoU was signed by Eng. Suleiman Saeed Abdullah, Director of Planning and Quality Department at MME, and Ms. Nada Al-Olaqi, Director of RDI Programs, at QRDI Council.
Eng. Suleiman Saeed Abdullah said that cooperation with QDRI Council realizes the two parties’ ambitions in supporting efforts to develop institutional competence and optimizing MME’s resources in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
“This partnership allows for RDI efforts to be directed towards solutions that address national challenges on the sustainability of Qatar’s resources,” he added.
The signing of the MoU is part the MME’s efforts to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030 in terms of improving the quality of life in the country, preserving the environment and the natural resources, achieving food security, and providing excellent public services.
The two parties will cooperate to identify the challenges and opportunities that the MME is facing and provide solutions through knowledge and innovation, especially in the areas of environment, agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. Partnerships will also be created between the Ministry and local, innovation-based companies as well as Qatar-based international research and development centers, to support development projects and joint testing of relevant innovative advanced technologies and solutions in Qatar.
The MoU also aims to build the MME’s innovation capacities and enable it to adopt new innovative technologies created by the private sector at an early stage. This can support the development of future industries heavily reliant on innovation and technological development, which can in turn enhance the competitiveness of the private sector.
Under the MoU, the MME will also participate in the Qatar National Research, Development, and Innovation Portal, which the QDRI Council is working to launch in stages starting from the fourth quarter of 2021. The portal will serve as a comprehensive national electronic platform advancing cooperation and partnership among all parties concerned with research, development and innovation in Qatar.
For her part, Ms. Nada Al-Olaqi highlighted: “The sustainability of resources is one of the national priorities of QDRI 2030. Innovation and R&D will play an important role in addressing the challenges to national resource sustainability by providing innovative technological solutions and solving R&D challenges. Our partnership with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment is a strategic partnership aimed at making the most of Qatar’s current and future investments in the RDI ecosystem by building competitive capabilities and developing and testing the advanced technology necessary to ensure the sustainability of Qatar's vital resources.”
